Working out how much you’ll need in the future
You’ll need to consider how much money you’ll need each year to live comfortably in retirement. The Retirement Living Standards set out by the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association (PLSA) show what kind of lifestyle you might have based on different income levels.
These are three different post-tax retirement income levels that have been created by the PLSA – minimum, moderate and comfortable. The website www.retirementlivingstandards.org.uk explains the kind of lifestyle each income level supports and the assumptions used to calculate this. For example, mortgage, rent or social care costs may need to be added, depending on your circumstances.
You can work out how much you might need in retirement by using our budget planner.
Once you know how much you’ll need in retirement and how much you’re likely to get, you can compare the two figures. If you’ll need more than you’re expecting to get from your current savings, you’ll need to see if you can close that gap.
