How our default strategy performed

Insights on our SEI Master Trust Flexi Default Investment Option (DIO).

Firstly, let’s remind you about investments! When you have a pension account in the SEI Master Trust, it’s invested in stocks and shares, government bonds and other investment funds to help it grow for your retirement.

The DIO for the SEI Master Trust is designed to suit the majority of our members, especially those who don’t want to make an active decision about where to invest their money. It focuses on growth when you’re younger and then becomes more cautious nearer retirement, by moving your investments into other, less risky funds.

So how has it performed?

We all know that the economic landscape has been difficult for both individuals and businesses over the last few years, not least of all due to the global pandemic, the war in Ukraine and the ongoing cost of living crisis. However, amongst all the bad news there is some good news to share as to how we have managed the impact on members’ pension investments.

Several independent pension organisations regularly compare the performance of the default investment options of all the Master Trusts in the market. They look at how well these ‘defaults’ are performing for members a long way away from retirement, and also for members getting closer to taking their benefits.

In a recent survey*, SEI’s Flexi Default Option performed well at all stages of the member’s journey, outperforming most of the other Master Trusts. The returns were in the top 3 of all Master Trust default option across all reported longer-term phases.

We’ve also just won the award for ‘Master Trust Offering of the Year’ at the European Pension Awards, with the judges citing our investment strategy as one of the reasons for our success. And we will continue to develop and review the investments we offer to ensure that all our members have the best opportunity to grow their savings for life after work.

Find out how your pension investments are performing by logging into your account. If you don’t already have an account you’ll need to register, which you can do by clicking ‘Register’ in the top right corner of the screen on the homepage and following the instructions.

Don’t forget that, with all investments, the value can go down as well as up.
